Li Keqiang met with British Foreign Secretary

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond Wednesday, saying China's current economic transition provides opportunities for cooperation with Britain.

One key feature of the transition is a transit from overdependence on natural resources to more dependence on human resources and innovation, Li said.

"We encourage mass entrepreneurship and innovation and put more emphasis on developing the emerging service industry on the basis of continuing lifting the traditional manufacturing industry, which will provide great opportunities for China-Britain cooperation," Li told Hammond.

China will continue to open up, ease market access and give equal treatment to Chinese and foreign enterprises, the premier vowed.

Speaking highly of the development of the China-Britain relationship, Li said President Xi Jinping had a successful visit to Britain last year.

China is willing to maintain a high-level exchange of visits with Britain, integrate the two countries' development strategies, enhance cooperation in areas including innovation, finance and nuclear energy, he said.

Li also called on both countries to step up coordination in international affairs and jointly safeguard regional stability and world peace.

Hammond said Britain is excited to grasp the opportunities brought by China's economic transition, pushing forward cooperation in nuclear energy, finance, science and technology, innovation and medicine.
He said Cameron expects to visit China this year.
According to a press release issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry Tuesday after a meeting between Hammond and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, China is looking forward to Cameron attending the G20 summit in China's Hangzhou this autumn, and welcomes him to visit China at a mutually convenient time to hold a bilateral annual prime ministerial meeting.

Jan Kerry Talk on Saudi and Iran Diplomatic

Jan Kerry Talk on Saudi and Iran Diplomatic

US Secretary of State John Kerry has spoken repeatedly in the last day to Saudi and Iranian officials to encourage dialogue and plans to call other officials in the region, the US State Department said on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran on Sunday after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran one day after the Saudi execution of a prominent Shi'ite cleric and 46 others on terrorism charges. The estrangement between Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia and Shi'ite-majority Iran, regional rivals, threatens to undermine Kerry's efforts to broker a peace agreement to end the nearly five-year Syrian civil war.

Avril Lavigne on Life After Lyme Disease

Avril Lavigne on Life After Lyme Disease

Singer Avril Lavigne opens up about the devastating disease that kept her bedridden for months – and how she's fighting to recover.
though a severe case of Lyme disease left Avril Lavigne bedridden five months, the singer says she's surprisingly thankful for the experience.

"Sometimes it takes instances like this to put things in perspective," says Lavigne, 30. "So in a way, I am grateful for all of this."

For the singer – who has worked nonstop since she was 17 when her debut album Let Go went platinum – being forced to step away from work was a blessing and changed her priorities.

"I've never had this much time off in my life," she says. "And I've never been more clear about what I want in life – health, family, love, happiness."

Her illness, which she contracted sometime last spring, also forced her to make some positive changes to her lifestyle.

"[My diet is] sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, all organic. I juice three times a day," says Lavigne, who adds that she is about "80 percent" better now.

"I do yoga, meditate and try to swim or walk every day. It's really up and down – you get better, then you get worse, then better."

I'm a very private person," she says. "But I can't just sit here and do nothing. I want to help people, and the first thing is bringing more awareness to Lyme disease … People don't really talk about the disease, and help can be minuscule."

Judge disqualifies US Attorney's office from sex abuse case

A federal judge has granted a motion by a Fort Yates man seeking to disqualify the North Dakota U.S. Attorney's Office from his case.
A federal jury in November found Donald Luger guilty of aggravated sexual abuse by use of force. Authorities say the assault took place against a 12-year-old girl in 1997.
Luger has argued former U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon represented him in a 2009 criminal case and that gave the government an unfair advantage in the sexual abuse proceedings.
District Judge Ralph Erickson granted Luger's motion to disqualify the office from the case this week.
Luger's attorney Duane Cates says the government could appeal or hire a special prosecutor to handle the case.
Luger's sentencing remains scheduled for May 8th in Bismarck.

Denver Police Cite Teens For Breaking Curfew On First Night Of Increased Enforcement

Denver’s curfew ordinance is now in effect and police already have caught teens breaking the rules.
Police issued three tickets to teens who blew the curfew Friday night.
Ruby Valdez of Denver worries about her 15-year-old daughter breaking the 11 p.m. curfew during the week, or the midnight curfew Friday and Saturday.
“There’s really not that much I think you can do about that, so my daughter runs away sometimes,” she said.
Youth that break curfew during the active enforcement period of April through September are transported to the Denver Juvenile Services Center through the Denver SafeNite Program, which is an alternative to putting the youth through the court system.

China Labor Movement

Strikes proliferate as China's working class awakens, posing challenge to authorities

hi Jieying took a risk last month and joined fellow workers in a strike at her handbag factory, one of a surging number of such labor protests across China.

Riot police flooded into the factory compound, broke up the strike and hauled away dozens of workers. Terrified by the violence, Shi was hospitalized with heart trouble, but with a feeble voice from her sickbed expressed a newfound boldness.
"We deserve fair compensation," said Shi, 41, who makes $4,700 a year at Cuiheng Handbag Factory in Nanlang, in southern China. Only recently, she had learned she had the right to social security funding and a housing allowance — two of the issues at stake in the strike.

"I didn't think of it as protesting, just defending our rights," she said.

More than three decades after Beijing began allowing market reforms, China's 168 million migrant workers are discovering their labor rights through the spread of social media. They are on the forefront of a labor protest movement that is posing a growing and awkward problem for the ruling Communist Party, wary of any grassroots activism that can threaten its grip on power.

"The party has to think twice before it suppresses the labor movement because it still claims to be a party for the working class," said Wang Jiangsong, a Beijing-based labor scholar.

Feeling exploited by businesses and abandoned by the government, workers are organizing strikes and labor protests at a rate that has doubled each of the past four years to more than 1,300 last year, up from just 185 in 2011, said Hong Kong-based China Labor Bulletin, which gathers information from China's social media.

"What we are seeing is the forming of China's labor movement in a real sense," said Duan Yi, the country's leading labor rights lawyer.

Iran deal

resident Barack Obama staunchly defended a framework nuclear agreement with Iran as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to prevent a bomb and bring longer-term stability to the Middle East. He insisted the U.S. would stand by Israel if it were to come under attack, but acknowledged that his pursuit of diplomacy with Tehran has caused strain with the close ally.

"It's been a hard period," Obama said in a weekend interview with Thomas Friedman, a columnist for The New York Times. He added that it is "personally difficult" for him to hear his administration accused of not looking out for Israel's interests.

Now in his seventh year in office, Obama cast the Iran talks as part of a broader foreign policy doctrine that sees American power as a safeguard that gives him the ability to take calculated risks.

"We are powerful enough to be able to test these propositions without putting ourselves at risk," he said, citing his overtures to Cuba and Myanmar as other examples of his approach.

The president's comments come days after the U.S. and other world powers reached a tentative agreement to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The framework cleared the way for negotiators to hammer out technical details ahead of a June 30 deadline for a final deal.

Obama argued that successful negotiations presented the most effective way to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, but insisted he would keep all options on the table if Tehran were to violate the terms.

Yemen

Yemen rebels stage raids on suspected opponents amid Saudi-led airstrikes

Shiite rebels stormed homes and offices across Yemen’s capital, detaining more than 120 activists and political figures suspected of supporting the Saudi-led coalition in its airstrikes against the insurgents, a rights group said Sunday.

The sweeps came as a senior rebel envoy was quoted as offering peace talks if the Saudi-led air campaign was halted, but opposition to the return of the country’s president could block any move toward dialogue.
The rebels, known as Houthis, have tightened control over the capital, Sanaa, for months. But the latest detentions, which began late Saturday, appear to signal a wider effort to root out suspected opponents as the Saudi-led attacks have targeted insurgent supply lines and ammunition depots but have largely spared populated areas.

Ayyan Ali, Money Landing Cases

or the last two weeks Adiala jail in Rawalpindi has hosted an unlikely prisoner: 23-year-old Pakistani supermodel Ayyan Ali.

Ever since then Pakistani media outlets have been concerned to find out if she is living in the jail under especially favourable conditions.
On 14 March Ayyan Ali was detained at Islamabad airport on charges of money laundering: the $500,000 in her suitcase exceeded the legal limit of cash that can be carried out of the country, which is $10,000.
Ms Ali denies the charge and says the money was acquired legitimately from the proceeds of property sales and that she was unaware of these customs rules.
Prosecutors have said that if convicted of smuggling the money out of Pakistan, the model could be forced to pay a heavy fine and face a 14-year jail term.
Two weeks of legal wrangling went by and finally at the end of March her application for bail was dismissed - so she faces yet more time in Adiala.

Porn sites must have age checks

Porn sites must have age checks,

Pornography websites must adopt age-restriction controls or face closure, the Conservatives say.

Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said the party would ensure under-18s were prevented from seeing adult content.
In a recent Childline poll, a tenth of 12 to 13-year-olds were worried they are addicted to pornography.
The plan is targeted at both UK-based and overseas websites and would be introduced if the Tories remain in power after the general election.
Experts have welcomed the idea but warned it would be difficult to implement.
The proposed system would be overseen by an independent regulator with the power to force internet service providers to block sites which failed to include effective age verification.
Also, providers who did not co-operate could be fined.

Iran talks shifted into next day

Iran talks shifted  into next day

Major powers and Iran negotiated into the early hours of Thursday on Tehran's nuclear program two days past their deadline, with diplomats saying prospects for a preliminary agreement were finely balanced between success and collapse.

The negotiations, aimed at blocking Iran's capacity to build a nuclear bomb in exchange for lifting sanctions, have become bogged down over crucial details of the accord, even as the broad outlines of an agreement have been reached.

After negotiators passed an original self-imposed deadline of midnight on Tuesday, they remained locked in talks through to the early hours of Thursday in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

"It is going to be long," said a senior diplomat.

Marie Harf, spokeswoman for U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, said on her Twitter account that negotiators had stopped at 6.00 a.m local time (0400 GMT) for a break and would resume in a few hours.

Kerry and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmetz said they would stay at least until Thursday in an effort to seal the "political" agreement, a milestone towards a final pact due by the end of June.

In a potentially hopeful sign, French Foreign Secretary Laurent Fabius returned for more talks after flying back to Paris the previous day because progress had been too slow.

"We are a few meters from the finishing line, but it's always the last meters that are the most difficult. We will try and cross them," he said on his return. "We want a robust and verifiable agreement and there are still points where there needs to be progress especially on the Iranian side."

Prior to departure, Khawaja Asif said Pakistan would provide support to Saudi Arabia if the country’s security was threatened. The minister emphasised that Pakistan supported a peaceful resolution and was seeking an end to the conflicts in the Muslim world.

On Monday, a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also concluded that Pakistan remains firmly committed to supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia 'in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Pakistan'.

It was emphasised during the meeting that Pakistan stands committed to playing a meaningful role in arresting the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.

In the same context, and to facilitate early resolution of the crisis and to promote peace and unity of the Muslim Community, the PM would be contacting the leadership of brotherly countries.

Hamas leader Meshaal warns of Israeli

Hamas leader Meshaal warns of Israeli

The political leader of the militant Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas says the results of Israel's elections will further diminish hopes for peace.
Khaled Meshaal told the BBC the victory of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party and its right-wing allies meant there would be "more extremism".
He said Hamas was not looking for any escalation, but would defend itself.
Militants in Gaza led by Hamas fought a 50-day war with Israel last summer that left more than 2,200 people dead.
On Thursday, Amnesty International said rockets and mortar attacks on civilian areas in Israel during the conflict amounted to war crimes.
