Drone killed mastermind of Kenya mall attack

The mastermind behind the 2013 attack at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, that left 67 people dead has died after an attack by a U.S. drone, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.
The incident happened on March 12 in the area of Diinsoor, Somalia, according to a statement from the agency.
U.S. forces using a drone struck a vehicle being driven by Adan Garar, a member of the intelligence and security wing of al-Shabaab, a group linked to al-Qaeda, the statement read.
"The attack was a success and resulted in the death of Garar," according to the statement.
Members of al-Shabaab shot up the mall with AK-7 rifles and grenades because of Kenya's attempts to help the government of Somalia defeat the militant organization, the group has said. Along with those who died, more than 200 people were hurt in the incident at the luxury shopping center.
The Pentagon said Garar was in charge of coordinating external operations for al-Shabaab, a job that included targeting Americans as well as Western interests.
